Q&A on Food Safety Plans

3 quick questions about food safety plans and your responsibilities as an importer of hay to the United States

  1. Do I need to have a food safety verification plan so that I can import hay? Short answer - yes you do. To elaborate a bit: As the hay could enter the US human food chain (through the animals it gets fed to, not as a food itself) the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires a food safety verification plan for hay imports.

  2. How many food safety plans do I need for hay imports? You need to have one plan per supplier that is updated at least once every three years.

  3. Can you help me with this? We can. We have a certified person who is able to help you to write your plans for hay imports, and they are able to provide you with the necessary resources to ensure that your plan will be sufficient for importing hay for years to come.
